Just ten percent of adults in the United Kingdom are pleased and contented with their working life. The vast majority of course won’t do a thing. The fact that you’re reading this surely indicates that you’re considering or may be ready for a change.
We’d strongly advise that prior to beginning a course of training, you run through some things with a mentor who knows the industry and can point you in the right direction. They can assess your personality and give you guidance on the right role for you:
* Would you like to work with others? If you say yes, are you a team player or is meeting new people important to you? Maybe you’d rather be left alone to get on with things?
* Have you given much thought to which industry you could be employed in? (With the economic downturn, it’s essential to choose well.)
* After re-training, how long a career do you hope for, and will the industry provide you with that possibility?
* Will this new qualification make it easier to discover new employment possibilities, and be gainfully employed until your retirement plans kick in?
Think about Information Technology, it will be well worth your time – it’s one of the few market sectors still on the grow in the UK and Europe. In addition, salaries and benefits exceed most other industries.
Kick out a salesperson who offers any particular course without an in-depth conversation to gain understanding of your current abilities and also your level of experience. Always check they have access to a generous array of training from which they could solve your training issues.
With a bit of real-world experience or certification, your starting-point of learning is very different to someone completely new.
Starting with a basic PC skills course first will sometimes be the most effective way to start into your computer programme, depending on your skill level at the moment.
One area often overlooked by those mulling over a new direction is the concept of ‘training segmentation’. This is essentially the breakdown of the materials for drop-shipping to you, which vastly changes the point you end up at.
You may think that it makes sense (with training often lasting 2 or 3 years for a full commercial certification,) for your typical trainer to courier the courseware in stages, until you’ve passed all the exams. But:
What would happen if you didn’t finish every module at the proposed pace? Often the staged order doesn’t work as well as some other order of studying might.
To avoid any potential future issues, most students now choose to insist that all study materials are sent immediately, and not in a piecemeal fashion. It’s then up to you in which order and at what speed you want to go.
Starting from the viewpoint that it’s good to choose the job we want to do first, before we’re able to consider what educational program would meet that requirement, how do we decide on the right path?
How can we possibly grasp the tasks faced daily in an IT career when it’s an alien environment to us? Most likely we have never met anyone who does that actual job anyway.
Ultimately, any kind of right conclusion can only grow via a detailed study across many shifting areas:
* Your personality type and interests – what working tasks you enjoy or dislike.
* Why you want to consider stepping into Information Technology – is it to achieve a particular goal such as self-employment for example.
* Have you thought about salary vs job satisfaction?
* With many, many ways to train in IT – there’s a need to gain some background information on what differentiates them.
* You have to take in what is different for each individual training area.
To bypass all the jargon and confusion, and reveal the most viable option for your success, have a good talk with an advisor with years of experience; someone who will cover the commercial realities and truth as well as the accreditations.
Watch out that all exams you’re working towards are recognised by industry and are up-to-date. ‘In-house’ certificates are generally useless.
The top IT companies such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe all have globally acknowledged proficiency programmes. These heavyweights can make sure you stand out at interview.
