A home security system is essential to keeping your property well-guarded. Well lit homes, whether it is indoor or outdoor lighting, are an important safety measure against thieves and burglars. Dipping into the psychology of a thief, darkness and shadows create a perfect cover for skulking and hiding. Home security lighting provides the home owner protection against these law breakers along with other necessary security measures.
Motion sensors are a great way to increase your home’s security. But even more important for some homeowners, they can help reduce your electric bill. Installing motion sensors on your home’s exterior lighting will prevent the lights from staying on all night long, when there is no need for them to be. Plus, if you are coming home late, they are much appreciated as you walk up your driveway to your front door! Follow the steps below to install the motion sensors for your home security.
Since there are plenty of motion sensors available, choose the one that goes with your existing exterior lighting. Now, before getting indulged into the electrical project, turn off the main circuit breaker.
Use the screwdriver to remove the bolts holding the fixture to the box. With the fixture hanging by the wires, use your voltage tester to ensure that the power is still off. With one hand holding the fixture, use your other hand to unscrew the wire nuts and separate the wires.
Create the access hole for the motion sensor using the drill and the hole saw. Cover the motion sensor wires and shaft using the rubber weatherproofing grommet. Lay down the wires through the new access hole.
There would be three wires coming from the sensor, just strip some insulation from the wires. Connect the white wire from the fixture to the white wire from the motion sensor. Do the same for the rest of the pairs of wires. Secure the wires with the wire nut and wrap the electrical tape over it.
Twist the corresponding colored wire of the electrical box with the wires of the fixture and the motion sensor, to each other (white to white and then black wire to black wire). Insulate with electrical tape or electrical screw caps. The same caps you just removed from the old light fixture should work fine.
Reinstate the fixture on the wall. Flip the switch of the circuit breaker in the on position. Set the direction of the sensor to the place you want to cover the most.
