Kick out a salesperson who offers any particular course without an in-depth conversation to gain understanding of your current abilities and also your level of experience. Always check they have access to a generous array of training from which they could solve your training issues.

With a bit of real-world experience or certification, your starting-point of learning is very different to someone completely new.

Watch out that all exams you’re working towards are recognised by industry and are up-to-date. ‘In-house’ certificates are generally useless.

The top IT companies such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe all have globally acknowledged proficiency programmes. These heavyweights can make sure you stand out at interview.

You’ll be charged for it somehow. You can be assured it’s not a freebie – it’s simply been shoe-horned into the price as a whole.

Qualifying on the first ‘go’ is what everyone wants to do. Going for exams when it’s appropriate and funding them one at a time puts you in a much stronger position to qualify at the first attempt – you revise thoroughly and are aware of the costs involved.

Doesn’t it make more sense to not pay up-front, but when you’re ready, not to pay the fees marked up by a training course provider, and also to sit exams more locally – rather than in some remote centre?

Why borrow the money or pay in advance (plus interest of course) on examinations when you didn’t need to? Big margins are made by companies getting paid upfront for exams – and then hoping that you won’t take them all.

Additionally, exam guarantees often have very little value. The majority of organisations won’t be prepared to pay for re-takes until you can prove to them you’re ready to pass.

On average, exams cost 112 pounds or thereabouts last year via UK VUE or Prometric centres. Therefore, why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra to have ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when it’s no secret that the most successful method is a regular, committed, study programme, with an accredited exam preparation system.

The 2006 British e-Skills study brought to light that over 26 percent of all IT positions available are unfilled mainly due to an appallingly low number of well-trained staff. Or, to put it differently, this clearly demonstrates that the UK only has 3 certified professionals for each 4 job positions in existence today.

This one truth alone clearly demonstrates why the United Kingdom is in need of many more new trainees to get into the IT industry.

It would be hard to imagine if a better time or market state of affairs could exist for getting trained into this rapidly emerging and budding industry.

Usually, trainers will provide a bunch of books and manuals. This isn’t very interesting and not ideal for achieving retention.

Many years of research has consistently demonstrated that becoming involved with our studies, to utilise all our senses, is much more conducive to long-term memory.

The latest audio-visual interactive programs featuring instructor demo’s and practice lab’s will turn you off book-based study for ever more. And you’ll actually enjoy doing them.

It’s wise to view a small selection of training examples before you sign the purchase order. You should expect instructor demonstrations, video tutorials and audio-visual elements backed up by interactive lab’s.

Avoid training that is purely online. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where offered, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – ISP quality varies, so you don’t want to be totally reliant on your internet connection always being ‘up’ and available.

Massive developments are flooding technology in the near future – and this means greater innovations all the time.

We’ve only just begun to get a feel for how technology is going to shape our lives. Computers and the Internet will profoundly transform how we view and interact with the rest of the world over the next few years.

A standard IT man or woman in the United Kingdom is likely to get noticeably more money than his or her counterpart outside of IT. Mean average remuneration packages are amongst the highest in the country.

Due to the technological sector emerging year on year, it’s looking good that the requirement for qualified professionals will continue actively for a good while yet.

Far too many companies only look at the plaque to hang on your wall, and avoid focusing on what you actually need – which will always be getting the job or career you want. Always start with where you want to get to – don’t make the journey more important than where you want to get to.

Imagine training for just one year and then end up doing a job for a lifetime. Ensure you avoid the fatal error of choosing what sounds like an ‘interesting’ training program only to spend 20 years doing a job you don’t like!

Starting with the idea that it’s good to home-in on the market that sounds most inviting first and foremost, before we’re even able to contemplate which method of training ticks the right boxes, how can we choose the way that suits us?

Because in the absence of any commercial skills in IT, how could any of us be expected to understand what anyone doing a particular job actually does?

The key to answering this dilemma in the best manner stems from a full conversation around a variety of topics:

* Personality factors plus what interests you – what work-related things you like and dislike.

* Why you want to consider moving into the IT industry – maybe you want to overcome a long-held goal like being your own boss maybe.

* The income requirements you may have?

* There are many markets to choose from in the IT industry – there’s a need to get some key facts on what sets them apart.

* How much time you’re prepared to spend on the training program.

For most people, getting to the bottom of so much data needs a long talk with an advisor who can explain things properly. Not only the qualifications – but also the commercial expectations and needs besides.

An advisor that doesn’t ask many questions – it’s likely they’re just a salesperson. If they’re pushing towards a particular product before learning about your history and current experience level, then it’s definitely the case.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got any qualifications that are related, then you will often be able to pick-up at a different starting-point to someone who is new to the field.

For those students embarking on IT studies for the first time, it’s often a good idea to start out slowly, kicking off with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first. Usually this is packaged with most training programs.

How the program is actually delivered to you isn’t always given the appropriate level of importance. How many stages do they break the program into? What is the order and at what speed is it delivered?

You may think that it makes sense (with most training taking 1-3 years to gain full certified status,) that a training provider will issue the courseware in stages, as you complete each part. Although:

Nevertheless, don’t wait till you have completed your exams before getting your CV updated. Right at the beginning of your training, list what you’re working on and get promoting!

Various junior support jobs have been bagged by students who are in the process of training and haven’t got any qualifications yet. This will at least get you on your way.

The most efficient companies to help get you placed are usually local IT focused employment agencies. As they’re keen to place you to receive their commission, they’re perhaps more focused on results.

A regular grievance of many course providers is how hard people are focused on studying to become certified, but how un-prepared they are to work on getting the position they’re acquired skills for. Get out there and hustle – you might find it’s fun.
